Kielder Observatory was the location for the finale of a public workshop exploring large scale 3D scanning at Kielder Water and Forest Park. As part of the Testing Ground series of workshops run by ScanLAB Projects + UCL a group of students from the Barteltt School of Architecture, together with local residents, learnt the basics of terrestrial laser scanning and used this technology to create a series of experimental films based around the rugged Kielder terrain. This short animation shows the Kielder Observatory where on the final night of the course the students and local participants held a film screening, prize giving and jacket potato feast to celebrate the fantastic shorts created in just a few days. The Kielder Observatory, shown in this animation, was scanned as part of Testing Ground 01: CAPTURE where students focused on 3D scanning for film making. Testing Ground 02: INSERTION will explore 3D scanning for fabrication through a series of live projects across the Kielder landscape in March 2013.
